National museum for antiquities in Leiden

In the majestic Temple hall of the National museum for antiquities in Leiden you'll find yourself face to face with an authentic 2000 years old Egyptian temple.

The temple was build about 2000 years ago, commissioned by the Roman emperor Ceasar Augustus. After the Romans had conquered Egypt they sat up a number of forts along their southern border. This temple belonged to one of these forts. It was originally dedicated to the goddess Isis and was later used as a Christian church. The temple was taken apart, stone by stone between 1960 and 1979, transported and rebuild in the lobby of the museum.
